At Point G, the sign 'Tyntyla Farm' is no longer there, however the drive now has a 'no entry road' sign at its beginning that cannot be missed.

A little further on in the text, the black-painted metal gate by the wall (indicated in the photo above) is now a wooden gate.

Just before point K there is now a barrier erected warning you of a landslip at Point L and informing walkers that the way is closed. This is easily negotiated as is the barrier at Point L, where the wooden post directing you to the steps leading up the bank to the right has lost its finger.

Finally the carving of the Raven is now a metal sculpture.

3 November 2010

Good news! Work is starting on the cycle path which is affected by the landslip at Point L (the money was granted before the Government cuts).

Bad news! The council plan to sell Ynys Hwyel visitors'centre, so refreshments there may not be available in the future.

More bad news! There are plans afoot to divert several of the rights of way around Pen y Cwarel House (see above). The ramblers may put in a protest as this is a historic Right of Way. If you have walked this path and are prepared for your name and address to be added to a petition, please email me.

The cycle path (see 3 November report) has now been reopened.

The conifer plantation between points A and B has now been felled.

The finger post between K and L at foot of steps has been replaced by a post with a black and yellow waymark indicating it as the Raven Walk. Similar waymarks appear at various stages along this section of the walk, including at the foot of the steps opposite the patio at the Ynys Hywel centre.

The conifer plantation between N and O has been felled. The plantation just before P is still there, but large sections have also now been felled so it might now be there for much longer.

In last para, you now enter the conifer plantation via a kissing gate instead of a stile, and leave it via a metal gate instead of the redundant stile. The 'scrub' referred has now mostly turned into woodland.

Walk 28 – Mynydd Machen

March 2009

There has been an ongoing problem of dogs running free between points G-H. After consultation between police, Highways Agency, the Ramblers and landowners, higher, more secure fences are to be erected. Also (hopefully) there will be signposts and waymarking in the area, which will help walkers find the correct route.

Should you have further problems, contact Blackwood police (01495 223673) and the Highway Authority. Also let me know so I can monitor the situation.

I would like to thank all who were involved in this dispute for their help in resolving this matter.
