Walk 10 – Somerset Coal Canal (2)

4 October 2008

Second line of page 49. The field that had the path running down the centre has now been divided in two so that the footpath now follows a fence, passing the electricity pole

30 July 2010 (part of the WWA e-book revision)

Between points B and C, the flagstone path through the culvert under the Combe Hay aqueduct is now quite rough in places, but is still passable with care. At the end of the culvert, the barrier has been removed and a wooden fence has been built a little distance away. Follow the path along the right hand side of the stream. After about 30 meters, cross to the left hand bank and walk through woodland to a stile. Cross the stile and turn left and then right, following the beech hedge on your right. Go over a stile on the left and climb the steps to a drive, then continue right to climb a stile by a gate (Rectory Lodge) on to a lane.

Page 52, para 4, line 2:The platform and single track bed beyond is now a cycle track that you follow, passing through a tunnel. The cycle track returns to the road at a barrier and the path continues on the track bed. Midford Castle...

The last part of the walk from ‘A bit of climbing now’ to where you reach the road, was a sea of mud in late March. The gateways seem to have been used by a large number of cows and the farmer with his tractor. There does not seem to be much alternative to ploughing your way through it.
